How to take care of Orchids!

1. Light: Orchids grow best at approximately 1.000-2000 foot candles (in the shade or filter light). The older the plant, the more tolerant to light they are. In the winter the plants require more light. They are never to receive direct sun-light.

2. Temperature and Humidity: The optimum temperature for the vegetative growth of Orchids is between 70 - 85 degrees Fahrenheit. They bloom under the temperature between 60 – 70 degrees Fahrenheit. The plants are easily damaged at the condition more than 95 degrees and below 50 degrees. Plants grow well at the relative humidity controlled between 60 – 80%. Under low humidity is recommended to mist the plants entirely.

3. Watering: Orchids should be watered every 5-7 days by giving the growing media a complete drenching in the morning. The media can dry out faster in the summer at good air movement. Make sure the media is completely dry before watering again.

4. Fertilizer: Orchids will grow well while fertilizer is supplied every 10-14 days Nitrogen is needed for vegetative growth, but the rates of potassium and phosphate in fertilizer should be increased before the flower spikes emerge. A 20-20-20 formulation is recommended for regular plant maintenance and a 10-30-20 for blooming.

5. Air movement: Air movement is essential. Good air movement will prevent microorganism from setting on the plants, and will also prevent spotting on the flowers during the winter at high humidity.
